2010-02-02 Get Healthy with the NVFC at the California State Firefighters Association Conference and Firehouse World The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is providing several interactive ways to get first responders to focus on their health during the CSFA Conference in San Diego, California, March 2-4, 2010. These include free cholesterol screenings and interactive fitness challenge at the NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program booth as well as a workshop to train first responders to be health and fitness advocates within their departments. With heart attack the leading cause of line-of-duty firefighter deaths, the NVFC launched the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program as a proactive campaign to educate the fire service about the importance of heart-health and to provide tools and resources to assist in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Health and Wellness Advocate Workshop is a two-day session that will be presented on March 2-3, 2010. The course is taught by ACE-certified instructors from L&T Health and Fitness, an award-winning fitness and health management company. This free Workshop teaches participants the basic principles behind developing a sound health and fitness program and how to become an advocate for health and wellness within the department, motivating their fellow first responders to adopt heart-healthy behaviors. The workshop mixes classroom components with hands-on learning to equip participants with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed as a health and wellness advocate. First responders who have completed the Health and Wellness Advocate Workshop have praised its format and content. “The instructors are very knowledgeable and interactive,” said one participant. “The class covers practical information and exercises that can easily be implemented at the station.” In addition to the Health Fair and the Health and Wellness Advocate Workshop, NVFC Director of Communications, Kimberly Ettinger, will be speaking during the General Session on the morning of Wednesday, March 3. The presentation will provide an overview of all of the NVFC’s programs, including the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, Fire Corps, and the National Junior Firefighter Program, as well as the many resources and opportunities the NVFC offers to help the fire service thrive.
